Efficiency Maine highlights three big reasons they’re popular: they produce lots of hot water, help dehumidify, and can deliver significant long-term savings.

In many Maine homes, especially where basements can run damp, a heat pump water heater’s “cooling and drying” effect can be a welcome bonus (with an important note: it doesn’t fully replace a dedicated dehumidifier because it runs based on hot-water demand).

The Efficiency Maine rebate: how much is it?

Efficiency Maine currently offers a $1,050 rebate for qualifying ENERGY STAR® heat pump water heaters.

Depending on where you buy, you may see this incentive either as:

• Instant discount at participating retailers/distributors, or

• Mail-in rebate if you purchase without an instant discount.

Installation considerations that can make or break performance

Heat pump water heaters are awesome when they’re installed in the right spot with the right setup. Efficiency Maine notes a few important considerations:

• Because of noise and cooling effect, they’re often best suited to basements/utility areas rather than living spaces.

• They create condensate that must drain properly (to a drain, sink, condensate pump, etc).

• For best efficiency, install them where temperatures stay above about 35°F and ideally in a room with enough air volume (Efficiency Maine suggests roughly a 10’ x 10’ or larger space)
